Hi Pam! Not sure about that number either. Maybe 1 of 2 things: 1. If the tag is on the engine, it is the engine sn. 2. (my bet) If the tag is on the machine, it could be a military machine. Think I've seen 'RENAC' before, but can't remember what it means. Haven't dealt w/many of these older tractors. Your Cat dealer has a technical service department that should be able to help you trace it down. Hope that helps!

Hi Pam,

Tommy here from SC. That number seems like a part number instead of a serial number. The only serial numbers that are close are a 2H series made between 1935 and 1941 and a 4R series made between 1941 and 1947. Where did this number come from? The serial numbers will be stamped into the engine and rear end cases on most tractors. Part numbers are generally raised numbers in the various castings. I hope this helps.

The numbers are off a CAT D6 Dozer and not a tractor. Does this help?

Pam,

What I was asking (wasn't clear was I!) is where on the tractor/dozer did the number come from. On my D6-8U, the serial number is on tags, one on the left side of the engine block near the starting engine or starter and one on the rear of the transmission/rear axle main case just below the seat and fuel tank on the rear face of the housing. If the tags are gone, the number is stamped into the block or housing. I think the other series tractors are similar. I have a good bit of info on the 8U and 9U series and I can find out about most others. Hope this helps.

Tommy
