Welding worn boom eyes

I have a JD310A backhoe/loader with the boom eyes that are worn alot. The worn part is the part that does not rotate on the pin. I have thought I might line bore them then fit a bushing in the eye and replace the pin. I have seen online some welding machines that would build up the worn spots using a mig welder. I am thinking that welding up first then line boring back to original size would be the best. What rods would I use as I don't think that I can get either mig machine or tig machine to get into the eye to weld it up. All suggestions are welcome. I don't have a problem making the line boring equipment in my machine shop to bore the eyes after I have welded it up. Just need some tips on what to use to weld it. I have stick, tig and mig...

Thanks
John

I HAVE HAD BETTER LUCK NOT WELDING HOLE AND THEN SIZING BUT BY OVER BORING ENOUGH TO GET A BUSHING TURNED WITH AT LEAST .250"WALL THICKNESS AND PRESS FITTING THAT INTO THE OVER BORE.BY DOING IT THAT WAY YOU DONT CREATE HEAT ISSUES AND LINE BORE TOOLS ARE NOT NOT TO COSTLY IF YOU DONT BY THE AUTO WELD SET UP.WE BUILT OUR OWN AND HAVE NO PROBLEMS AT ALL.THE MAIN THING TO REMEMBER EITHER WAY YOU CHOOSE IS THAT IF YOU ARE DOING TWO PINS IN A HINGE SET UP THEY WILL BE HARD TO KEEP LINED UP WITHOUT A BORING BAR TO BORE BOTH WITH THE SAME SET UP.PILLOW BLOCK BEARINGS ARE DIRT CHEAP THRU NORTHERN,COLD ROLL BAR 1" SMALLER THAN HOLE YOU NEED TO BORE AND CUTTERS FROM MSC DIRECT.THIS HAS WORKED GREAT FOR ME BUT EVERY JOB IS DIFFERENT

Thanks for the info. Did you make any means to feed the boring bar or did you just put a tool bit in the rod and chuck a 3/4 drill up and carefully proced? I have seen some that have a screw feed... I had in mind just using some plain bearings on the shaft instead of pillow block bearings as they cost alot less... I had planned on tacking the mount onto the boom after centering it up in the holes....

Thanks
John

WE USE A LEAD SCREW SET UP PUSHING AGAINST A THRUST BEARING THATWE MACHINED A RECESS IN THE END OF BORING BAR FOR,AND WE TACK UP SOMETHING TO HOLD THE NUT RIGID,WE ALSO USE STRAIGHT SELF ALIGNING BEARINGS AS WELL DEPENDING ON ROOM AND SO ON,TO POWER IT WE BOUGHT A POWER GEAR BOX WITH ELECTRIC MOTOR FROM SURPLUS SUPPLY THEY HAVE A GOOD WEB PAGE ASWELL,RPM'S FOR OURS IS LIKE 26-30. WE GENERALY MOUNT THE POWER UNIT ON PLATE,STAND OR BENCH,THEN RUN A PTO SHAFT TO THE BORING BAR,IT IS NOT NEARLY AS COMPLEX AS IT SOUNDS READING THIS.IF WOULD LIKE PICTURES I CAN TAKE SOME IN THE NEXT DAY OR TWO.IF YOU EMAIL ME DIRECT I CAN GET MORE SPECIFIC INFO. IF YOU HAVE A MACHINE SHOP ANOTHER GOOD PART FOR THIS WOULD BE TO MAKE TWO FUNNEL SHAPED ALUM. PIECES TO CENTER THE BAR UP TO GET STARTED I HAVE NOT DONE THAT YET BUT SOON.

Your best bet is to build up the bore and machine to fit the pin, forget the bushing. As you said it is the part that the pin does not turn in. If you just grind it out to fit a bushing, it will eventually wear out the fit of the bushing, now not only is the pin loose on the bushing, the bushing is now loose in the bore. Nothing will last forever. Weld it up with a 7018 rod, just be sure it doesn`t pull the hardness out of the base metal and it won`t machine cut, bore to fit the pin and good as new!!!!! !!!!! !!!!

Have you ever done that before? What will pull the hardness out?

Thanks
John

Should I weld it slow to keep the heat of the base part down to keep from pulling the hardness out of the base metal?

Thanks
John

I would die grind the hole big enough to accept a bushing, then weld the bushing in with your TIG. mild steel wire would be fine to hold the bushing in.
