Ford 655C Oil Pressure

I recently got a nice 1990 655C w/ 2800 hrs on it. I changed the engine oil & filter the other day, used a Napa 1806 filter (this is what was already on it), and Mobil 1 10W-30 oil. I checked and found Mobil 1 meets the API specs called for by Ford. Started it up, and went to work. After an hour or so, the oil low pressure light gradually came on. Engine speeds above idle shut the light off. I instinctively shut down and checked the level, which was still on full, no signs of leakage. The symptoms didn't seem to be indicative of an oil pump failure, so I continued to operate. As I went on, the oil light began to come on even at higher rpm's. I worked for 4 more hours with the light on, and no problems, no temperature rise, no bad sounds. When the machine was allowed to cool down and restart, the light is off again but comes on after an hour. Could this be related to viscosity difference of Mobil 1? What should I do? thanks! Jim

Not sure what you mean by 'gradually came on', but I would first check the pressure switch and/or actual pressure in the engine - ie fit a guage. First find the fault - then you may be able to fix it.
I would not recommend running any engine with the oil pressure warning light on. Even if it were a faulty indicator, you would not know if another fault developed until too late!

Thanks for the info. By 'gradually came on' I mean the light first just flickered once in a while at low rpm, then came on steady at low rpm, then began to stay on even at high rpm. after it cools down, the light stays off again for an hour or so, then the above repeats.

Jim,
After checking with a guage, I expect you will find either a faulty sender switch or maybe there is a relief valve on the pressure side of the oil pump which is faulty. Hope this is all....

Finally got around to fixing this, it was a faulty pressure switch. Thanks everyone!
