JD 420 steering clutches

the left steering clutch is starting to slip under alot of load (not under most conditions),I have had them rebuilt a long time ago but had a dealer do them.what all wears out in them and does anyone have the wear limit specs and setup for them?thanks steve

They have a throwout bearing, like any clutch, that needs to be adjusted. You get to it thru the barrel-bung cover on the front side of the final drive. There is a bolt that is over a slot behind the bearing. Loosen it with a 1/2" socket, pull the steering lever back slightly and if it isn't rusted tight the TO bearing should slde away from the clutch fingers. I think the gap should be about 1/16". Don't pull the lever too far, it will be hard to move the bearing back again. HTH
