I have a Cat 951C, 69H serial # that I need to adjust the steering clutches on and am unsure how to do it. Also if anyone has a service manual I would be interested in buying one. Please advise.

Brian, the clutches usually don't need adjusting unless you are just installing them. The brake bands do though. There should be a cover at each side on the steering clutch cover that you can take off and tighten up the brakes as tight as they will go then back them off 1 and 1/2 turns. Is the machine able to turn in both directions?

Bob, it turns good in both directions. I just purchased this machine, it had been setting for about 2 years. The pedals are going down a good bit futher than before. I'll try adjusting the brake band to see what happens. With this machine setting for so long is it possible the brake drum was rusted and now that I have ran it a while its just now showing the need to be adjusted?

Brian, the drums shouldn't have rusted much as they are in oil. Adjust them up and see how the do. If they keep needing adjustment the linings might have started to deteriorate. You have to pull the clutches out to reline the bands though. Half way down the travel the clutches should be released and the rest puts the brake on.
