I have just purchased a 955 Cat track loader and need to adjust the brakes. I haven't received a service manual yet and would like to get them adjusted this week. Could someone please tell me how to do this. I haven't been able to find the serial number but it is a 1969 and the hood slopes toward the front.
Thanks
Gary

Gary, at the back of the machine on top of each brake is a raised cover held on with three 3/8" bolts. Under these covers are the adjusting bolts. Tighten them right up as much as you can, them back them off 1 and 1/2 turns. They should click 6 times in a turn so count back 9 clicks. try it and tweak it from ther if you like. you have a late 60A 955H

Thanks Bob, I also noticed the right track seems to be a little loose, is there a procedure to adjust the tracks so they are both the same?

Gary, look for a flap that opens half way up the track frame cover. Inside there at the front of the recoil spring is the track adjuster cyl. The front of the cyl has two fittings on it. One tall one with a 7/8"hex to open and slack the track adjustment and a shorter one with a grease fitting to tighten the adjustment. Since you are new to the machine take a bar and pry on the idlers and all the rollers to make sure they are not worn out in the center bearing area. Each idler and roller shaft has a small plug with a 3/8" square hole in it. Pull these plugs out and see that some oil dribbles out. You should also pry on the sprockets to make sure they don't move in and out and that the final drives are full of oil, plugs have a hex or 3/4" square hole in them and are behind the sprockets.

I am just about ready to put my loader to work but am looking for direction regarding what oil to use, how much does it hold, which filters should be changed, etc. It runs good but has been sitting for about 10 years (they started it a couple of times a year). Should I also change the hydraulic fluid? What weight should I use and is there filters in the system for this too.
