I'm trying to restore the aluminum "JOHN DEERE" nameplates from my 350 crawler-loader. I've made a wood die set and straightened out the rounded edges OK and can buff the letters to get them shiny. My problem is how to repaint the flat black background and get a neat job. Has anyone done this successfully? Tips will be much appreciated.

dave I don't know if the JD is the same as the ones on my old Willys Jeep, but on it the plates were stamped out of aluminum and the letters and emblems,,etc. were higher than the background that the die hit the hardest. In other words, they were raised areas and low areas only. So I cleaned all the old paint off and put a light coat of lacquer on the entire surface of the plate. Let it dry and then got some fine sandpaper and a block and removed the paint from the high area of the plate. This then became shiny aluminum on a black background. I suppose one could give the plate another coat of clear lacquer or enamel to make it more durable and "pretty" if they wanted to. You could probably use enamel on both coats but you would have to let the first one dry for a long time before you could sand on it succesfully. JD plates may not be the same. But the Willys plates looked factory when finished. Mike

Did the same thing for my 350 crawler last year.
Pull up a comfortable chair next to the workbench, get a cup of coffee, a roll of blue masking tape and a single edge razor blade. Doesn't take as long as you think.
