I'm looking at a D2 with frozen steering clutches. How hard a fix and how much in parts? Or how much to have it done? I'd like to know so that I can decide if it's a deal or not.

Jeff,

Frozen steering clutches on a D2 are a real bear to fix if you can't break them loose by washing or pushing a heavy object with the lever back. A lot of D2's and D4's with frozen s-clutches have been parted out or turned into scrap because; amount of work required, you may have to crack the brake drum to remove the final drives, and the cost of steering clutch parts.

Just a thought: You might try filling the clutch case with kerosene to just below the throwout bearing, and then working it for a while. Sometimes you have to tighten the clutch up a little, but I have had good luck doing this. When it breaks loose, drain the kerosene, and run it for a while, just to make sure it clears up as it should. I just did this to my friend's HD5 Allis Chalmers, took about half an hour of running to break it loose, and now the stuck side works better than the side that was already loose. Good luck!
