My HD4 has the same tracks as the H3/HD3. The later 600 series will also fit (e.g. 652, 652, etc.). H3/HD3, H4/HD4 tracks have a pitch of 6", same as International crawlers TD340 through TD7, but the IH tracks have a different width. There were/are two types of rollers used on these crawlers. One is the axle-in-bushing style, and the other uses Timken style roller bearings. They both fit, one was "standard" and the other "heavy duty." Bottom rollers are EXPENSIVE and I've heard that the aftermarket companines, i.e. Berco, are going to stop making them. I've been searching for bottom rollers for mine and have been thinking about buying a parts machine. New Berco rollers are $188. I've been given quotes for original-used as high as $240, and new from Allis (AGCO, Minnparr, or whatever) at over $500 apiece!!

Jim, Good choice in my book! I have an HD3 highlift - good machine. Typical Allis Chalmers product - nice comfortable machine, easy to operate, lots of power.

The diesel engine is not always the easiest to start, need a good hot battery and a good starter. A lot of parts are available for the tractor. I had a lot of trouble finding bottom roller seals for it, but I understand the AGCO is making them again. The engine parts are readily available from most any place that sells rebuild kits for industrial equipment. I can say that they are NOT CHEAP. I recently rebuilt the engine in mine, and have about $2000.00 in it (complete out-of-frame major - sleeves, pistons, rings, ground the crank, new valve train, water pump, starter, radiator recored, etc.). But it runs like a new one, and hopefully will for a long time. The tranny was a different story. The HD3 was the ONLY tranny that used the gears it uses. They're a constant-mesh, so most of the wear is on the "dogs" the shift collars mesh with. This will cause it to jump out of gear. The only way I've found to rebuild is used. But if the machine has had any care at all, it should be okay. Final drive parts (bull gears, pinions, drive axles, etc.) I have been able to find new aftermarket, and they have been excellent quality. A good tractor, if you have time to work with it. As I always tell people about these tractors: As long as you keep in mind 3 things - it's old, it's slow, and it's small - it will last you a long time. Let us know if you get it and how it turns out.

Jim - I have a AC H3, which is the gas version of the same tractor and I have a lot of fun with it. Have used it for constructing a dam, skidding logs on a couple of timber sales and for leveling gravel on small road projects. It has a Holt Winch which is a pain to maintain, but usefull when working. With the winch and dozer blade, I believe mine runs around 6,000 lbs. Can move it around with my 3/4 ton PU. The post by Dale(OH) spells it out pretty good. I,m not a master mechanic, but can keep it running. Put in new steering clutches, Starter and fuel pump. Paid $5,000 for tractor and have put in around $2,500. Wouldn't sell it for double what I've got in it. Have fun with it - nice machine. TF
