Importance of Rock Guards

I am in the process of getting the JD 2010C crawler I recently bought ready for work/play. My question is about the rock guards. There were no guards on it when I got it. The guy I got it from said he never had them and used it for 10+ years. I got a friend with a 1010 who says I defintely need them, another with a 350 who took his off years ago. What's your opinion guys? Just using it around the property, cutting a few roads and some landscaping.

They appear to be optional equipment according to my op manual. I would think the first dozers didn't have them, then they were invented due to track component failures due to rocks. Seems possible if the right type of rock got in the chain you might bend or break the shaft of a bottom roller. Necessary--No, may prevent a failure Yes. Depends on your area and temperature. Steel breaks easier at low temperature. I never thought a rock would go thru a steel radial tire but that happened to me in New Hampshire--Granite.

I have had rock guards off 2 differant JD 450's and neither would line up with all the bolt holes when it was time to put them back up, had to use a porta power to bend them. Anyone else had this happen? My opinion, put them on if you can aquire them cheap enough and plan on working your machine. If there going to cost you the cost of a set of rollers roll the dice and leave em off since you know rocks are not a major problem according to others in your area. The extra strength to your frame is a good point, yours is no where near the duty strength of a 350 or 450 just going by its looks. I wouldn't leave them off a machine i was repairing, though i can see why some would be tempted if they didn't line up right like those i have worked with. Nice paint, its gonna hurt a little when the tracks start throwing dirt and wearing it off.

I see they also make shields for the front idlers on JD 450's but i have never seen one or been able to locate used ones. Another option, but i guess not as popular as rock guards.

They are not just for keeping out rocks but add strength to the track frame. I would put them on.

Nah! Had my 1969 JD 350 since 1972 & never had 'em & worked plenty of rocky ground.

You must have the rock guards; how else are you going to keep the rocks in with the rollers and rails? Most new machines have gone away from rock guards. They have short sections of track guides with help keep the rails from coming off the rollers and let the rocks, sand, etc out. I don't see them as a requirement.
