My HD-20 w/Detroit 671 -has filled the crankcase with Diesel Fuel - My first thought was that it must be a bad fuel pump - however the fuel pump is not a diaphram type pump - so my question is - does this fuel pump have a seal that is most likely the problem or is there some other obvious source that I do not know about?? I have NOT torn into it yet - I do have a manual - BUT - I thought I would ask for some inputs before working on it - THANX IN ADVANCE !!!!!

Never heard of a 6-71 in a HD-20, should have a 6-110 but no matter. The fuel pump has a shaft seal that can fail.

Lee: I was told it was a 671 ??? I really don't know- It appears to be a six cylinder version of my HD-10 which is supposed to be a 471- I thank you for your response - however the reason I did not tear into it yet is due to the picture in the book it looks like the "seals" if they fail would cause the fluid (fuel-or-oil) to dump out the "drain" hole betweeh the two seals ??? - With that in mind do you know any other source to dump fuel into the oil pan - I had it over acrossed the valley doing some work when it first started spitting fluid out and I shut it down on the (dirt) road - I figured out what was going on - so I changed the filter & oil so as I could get it home (It does NOT move very fast) but as I was coming up the last hill it was doing it again (Approx. 30 min's of babying it home) However to get the torgue converter to move it is still faster than I wanted to rev it !!!!! Oil pressure was still OK - BUT - it is not something you can just PUSH out of the way !!! Waiting to hear back from YA!! - or anyone else with any thoughts - THANX in ADVANCE (P)

Paul, If it is not the fuel pump seal, it could be one of the fuel lines that run to the injectors or one of the injectors. If it leaks that bad it shouldn't be that hard to find. Pull off rocker cover and run motor and watch for leaks. It helps to use compressed air to blow oil off the pipes and injectors so it is easier to see the fuel leak.
Good luck.
Matt

Matt: THANX - I agree it should not be that hard to find - I had not given a thought to the fuel line issue - and that is why I asked for inputs like yours - THANX again !!!! I hope to get a chance to check it out this weekend when I am off work.
