I have seen some posts on here in the past asking how to weld cast iron. Here is a great source of information on the topic if anyone is still looking for info. good luck!

I will have to say that I have had the best success arc welding cast iron using a 309 rod. This has worked great on gear boxes and stuff of that nature, and would recommend it.

Jim, Before you get too tightly wrapped in that article , you should read this all the way thru to see what they say about arc weld ( the worst choice to repair cast iron ) . I do quite a bit of cast repair and arc weld is best left on the shelf . Oxy/ acet is the way to do it . Also here are some pictures of cast iron repair and some other things.
