MC Battery Box Door

While working on my newly-acquired Deere MC, I am continually frustrated by the cramped access to the battery. The door swings open only part way due to the side frame member being in the way. Even adding water is a struggle, and it appears that installing/removing the battery would involve pulling off a bunch of sheet metal and the gas tank. I know the topside of this unit was shared with wheeled tractors...did they have different set-ups for the batt. compartment, or is this just the way it is? The manuals don't seem to address this issue.

Any insight appreciated....thanks.

If your MC has the original battery door, it has a split hinge. If you grasp the door and wiggle it up and down as you pull, it will come off. Then it is easier to work on. If it is a reproduction door, you will need to take out the two bolts that hold the hinge on to the dash.

Thanks guys,

My guess is it is a repro door based on Lavoy's description, since I have wiggled and yanked and studied it as to how I might remove the pin, or apply any other method short of a torch. I'll look at it more closely, but I think the hinge knuckles are arranged so they are captured like a regular door hinge. Makes you wonder how much more costly it would have been to make it like the original...perhaps it fits other models and works OK on most?

It works OK on the tractors, just not the crawlers. Believe it or not, I have tried to get one of the manufacturers to realize that the door is wrong, but all to no avail. I do have a correct door being looked at right now to see if it can be done, but won't know for a while.

My 40C has two roll pins protruding 3/4 inch from the pedestal at what would be your hinged end. The cover has matching holes in a 90 degree bend from the face of the door. It uses the same latch. You mate the holes and latch it. The door comes off completely after you unlatch it.
