i'm pretty new to this older 1850 JCB diesel TLB that we bought for our farm. we use it sparingly. the trans has been weak since the we bought it, but goes up hills slowly in 1 or 2nd gear. higher gears seem to slip to torque converter? haven't got a good manual or service guide yet cause they are hundreds of dollars. today when we took the tractor out to the hayfield , the tractor will only go forward. when you shift the shuttle to R. the tractor will not move. any ideas where to start looking. the shuttle shifter seems a little stiff. too. we probably shoud send this to the shop someday, but we want to learn about all the "bugs" first. is one of these tractor trans very expensive or just a little expensive?

By what you say in your last post you have the Borg Warner shuttle box,the forward/reverse is operated by a cable, the nudge pedal pushes a plunger in the centre of the change valve, there should be 10thou clearance between the plunger and the bolt head, the shuttle should be checked for oil with the engine on low idle, all that been well you have a problem inside, the beleville spring for the reverse clutch pack could be broken or the clutch plates worn, the oil pump could be weak and not strong enough to engage the clutch etc,the shuttle box is the same inside as what goes on the 580 Case, below is a link to where you can see if yours looks the same, there is a next button at the top of the page to go to the next one.

thanks AJ, you've got the correct shuttle for me.i'll check that measurement but then i'll probably have to send it to a shop as that looks like a pretty big job for me. any other suggestions that i should have done while getting repaired? maybe the torque converter replaced while its split?

It would be a good idea to have the torque checked out,it will be no good having a good shuttle and bad torque you will be back to square one,all that sort of stuff is service exchange here in the UK,you should inquire about rebuilt units.
Good luck

On top of the transmission you will find the solenoid or the directional valve. One side fwd, the other rev. I don`t remember which side is which. Put the manual shift lever in neutral and turn on the key. shift to fwd and witha multimeter see what plug has system power on one of the wires. the other will be ground, check it also. Then shift it to rev and do the same at the other plug. Because it goes fwd one of the plugs HAS to have power and ground. If the other plug/rev has no power you either have a relay problem, a wire harness problem, aconnector problem or a shifter handle problem. Good luck with your troubleshooting adventure!!!!! !!!!!

yes, thank you. i was looking again last nite. first of all it is a 1550 TLB not an 1850. i found the shuttle valve. looks like a combination clutch/shuttle. the foot clutch seems to release the plunger on the shuttle valve too. will have to study it more.
