Bobcat 610 using engine oil as hydraulic fluid?

I have done a search of the archive and only confused myself more. I just bought a Bobcat 610 skid-steer loader and I want to change out the hydraulic fluid. The owners manual call for Dexron type ATF fluid. When I went to my local Bobcat dealer he said that for my older machine it would be best to use 10W30 motor oil and not ATF fluid. He even showed me a booklet from Bobcat stating DO NOT use automatic transmission fluid.

I am trying to make sure that this is really makes sense to use motor oil for the loader's hydraulics and chain bath. Was the dealer talking about the oil that goes in the engine? Help. Thanks.

I have a 610 and the manual says to use 10w30 motor oil. Have never had a problem with it.

My 722 says use 10w-40. That's what is in it and I have had no problems.

Do what the dealer told you! I own a 600 b/c which is an early generation than your 610 and use 10w30 year round in both the engine and hydraulic system.

This has nothing to do with a Bobcat brand but I've got a Case 1845C which takes 10w30 engine oil in the chain drives and (with HTO additive) for hydraulic fluid. A lot of the older tractors I've had called for engine oil in the hydraulics if a certain spec oil wasnt available. It calls for 15w40 in the diesel (Cummins C-390) engine.

Your comments are really interesting. I have a 610. The owner's manual says to use "black gold," whatever that is. But when I got the used machine a few years ago I went to a dealer, Bobcat of Boston, and they told me that ATF was the right thing to use, and that's what I've been doing. I have not encountered any problems and the machine runs fine.

Yea this is interesting. I went to the www.botcat.com website this morning and found the following in the FAQ section:

"All Bobcat loader engines’ must use API classification CD, CE or better. Hydraulic and hydrostatic fluid specifications must use Bobcat hydraulic/hydrostatic transmission fluid (P/N 6563328). If this fluid is not available, use 10W-30 or 10W-40 SAE Motor Oil."

This still is confusing because the question was "What kind of hydraulic fluid do you recommend in my Bobcat machine?" but above it still sounds like it talking about "loader's engines".

I have asked a question on the bobcat website to see if I can get a better answer. I'll post it here when or if I get a response.

Thanks for your input.
