no-leak joints

I have 1/2" JIC hose male fittings that connect to 1/2" NPT black pipe [female]. No amount of torque gives a leak-tight fit. This setup serves the 4-in-1 bucket so is maxing at about 2500 psi. Anyone recommend a sealant? Teflon isn't a sealant but opinions? Thanks, Tip

Without putting on my dog collar and giving a sermon, remove the pipe, take it to the hydraulic shop, have them swage on the correct fitting, replace the pipe, job done proper and professional, hydraulic fittings should not be mismatched.

OK guys. I appreciate the replies and I like concensus. Sounds to me that I need to go to the shop and buy a fitting that is JIC female and converts to a male 1/2" NPT [assuming I can get those]. I was hoping that what I had would be sufficient but, well, there ya are.

Removed EVERYTHING. Went to the shop and salvaged enough of the original tubing and returned to NAPA and got a few new ends. Bottom line is that by close of business tonight its all done and leak free. I guess I got too close to the dark side. Tip

Assuming I am understanding what you are describing..... A JIC fitting has straight threads while a NPT fitting has tapered threads. If you are trying to get a Male JIC fitting to tighten up into a regular Female NPT fitting and not leak... It Is Never Gonna Happen.... There is no metal to metal seal due to the differences in the straight and tapered threads therefore no seal....JIC relies on the angled cone to seal to the opposing angle in the other fitting, while pipe threads rely on the metal to metal contact between the two opposing thread angles. Sounds like what you need is a female NPT -to- Female JIC swivel. Screw the NPTF end into the cylinder? and then screw the JIC fitting into the swivel end..... Now there is anther type of female swivel fitting (that isn't a JIC) that is designed to screw directly onto a NPT hydraulic fitting like you normally find on the end of a hose. If this is what your talking about then again the joint is a metal to metal type seal with the ID of the NPTM fitting sealing against a ridge in the female swivel fitting. Basically the same principle as a JIC but different style fittings. If this is what you have then you need to check the end of the NPT fitting and insure it is clean and doesn't have any nicks, burrs, etc on the tapered edge of the ID that will prevent it from sealing. The same goes for the raised sealing surface in the female half. If all is good then it should seal....About the only option left then is to change the female half and see if that makes a difference. If it still doesn't seal consider getting a different type of fitting and having a new hose made up to fit. As for teflon tape, pipe dope, etc. it's always a hoot to see how many times it gets used on straight thread fittings, that don't seal around the threads at all, yet gobs and gobs are applied, and I guess fingers are crossed, trying to get the leak to stop..... Just my .02, hope it helps.

Steve, I would try the teflon tape. A JIC fitting has the same thread as a pipe thread. And since you have a male JIC and a female pipe fitting, it should seal up. Check to make sure neither fitting is cracked, and that the threads are good. I have never had this particular problem with the set-up you have. It should seal up on its own, but I would try the tape. Good luck!
