The answer to your second question is,YES. The shop manual for your make and model crawler will give you the step-by-step to do almost anything you'll want to do. I pulled an IH TD340 back to life using the shop manual for final drive and injector pump problems. I'm not a mechanic, but the manuals were pretty straight forward and wellworth whatever I paid. A rebuild on the injector pump would have cost BIG $$$. GOOD luck, Jim

Not sure what you mean by freeing the turning brakes. What is the crawler doing? If the brakes are stuck it will not move but there are other problems that can cause the machine not to move.

Crawler will move forward and backwards in a straight line. Steering levers do not turn it. Seller says clutches are frozen ???

Sam, I always put kerosene in the clutch compartment, stopping just short of the throwout bearing. Run the tractor, putting a load on it. This should break the rust loose in the clutch. Be sure to try using the clutch often while doing this. You may have to tighten up the adjustment during this process to make the clutch open enough to let the rust out. When it breaks loose, drain the kerosene out, and run it until the brakes and clutch dry out. If you have to tighten the clutch, be sure to readjust it after you drain the kerosene. If it doesn't break loose after an hour or so of running, you will probably have to tear it down and pull the clutches. Not fun! Good luck, and keep us posted!

It sounds to me that you do not have steering brakes that are frozen but rather the steering clutches have rusted together and will not release. When you pull the steering levers, you are actually releasing spring pressure that compresses friction clutches on each side of your final drives. This has nothing to do with your main drive clutch for driving the tractor forward. Each side has it's own clutch pack to de-clutch each track sprocket. When on track is de-clutched, the other will drive the tractor in the direction you wish to turn. What I have done many time in the past with this problem, (usually happens due to lack of use) is to place the tractor in medium speed gear, and hold one steering lever pulled back toward you to de-clutch on track only, and gently drive the tractor forward and reverse several times. Do this while you continue to hold the steering lever pulled back. You may need to shock load the clutch by dumping you foot off the pedal several times, but by going back and forth several times, they usually break free. Some tractors use wet clutches (run in oil) and some are dry plate. The dry clutches are the ones usually giving problems but again this if from lack of use.
Hope this helps you.
