Have a few questions regarding pins and bushings on a Case 580 backhoe.

First, are the bushings case hardened or the pins? If the bushings are case hardened do I really need to change the bushings or just the pins to remove "slop"??

Second, I would like to redo the pins/bushings etc on the swing tower. In the manual they have removed the entire backhoe and then removed the swing tower. Is this really necessary or is there another way. Don't really have all the hoist etc to do it the way described in the manual. All advice/comments are appreciated.

Thanks to all!!!!

Tom

The pins and bushings are both hardened. Hopefully the holes in the castings that hold the bushings are not worn. If they are you might want to use some "liquid steel" or similiar product to hold them in place. Basically it is a two part epoxy with steel filings mixed in. I think a company called Devcon makes it. Deere sells it to repair worn front axle spindles. As to not taking the hoe apart, I am not sure how you will get the bushings out unless they are really loose. Normally you have to drive or use a puller to remove them. If they come out easily, you might stretch out the hoe, block it and then use a jack and the hoe's hydraulics to line things up as you put the pins back in place. I have done this when replacing pins and bushings on an older C model. It saves the mess of having to take all the hoses loose and then wrestling with the boom and tower to get everything lined up and back in place. Good luck.
