Looking for advice. Was running my backhoe, shut it down for a break and went to start it after about an hour and NOTHING. Not even the alternator or oil lights, no movement on amp. meter.

Noticed the following; After the above SOMETIMES when you turn key to ON position Alt, Oil light, and Amp meter move as normal. Turn key to START position lights go OUT, AMP meter goes to zero, NO activity at all from starter. Turn key OFF then to ON no oil/alt.lights, no AMP meter. Wait about 5 minutes, turn to ON lights and meter respond. If you then put any load on circuit (try to put on turn signal, headlights etc) all go DEAD. Performed this test at least 6 times with same results.

Performed the following; 1) Checked voltage on both batteries = 13.04v; 2) Check specific gravity of all 12 cells = EXCELLENT; 3) Check all machine grounds = no corrosion or loose wiring etc. 4) Checked voltage at starter = 12.89v; 5) Performed starter check as described in manual = good spark when touched terminals with wire jumper, bendix popped, then nothing, no spark nothing; 6) removed started from machine, wired it to batteries on the machine with jumpers = bendix moves in & out freely and motor turns freely therefore checked OK; 7) Performed alternator test as described in manual = Got confusing results. Positive lead of volt meter on BAT term, neg. lead on alternator case with starter switch in OFF position gave 12V reading, when put in ON position would sometime give 12v other time NOT; 8) Checked all leads into alternator = OK; 9)Checked 40 amp fuse on engine for continuity = OK; 10) Checked fuses under instrument cluster for continuity = OK.

Where do I go from here!!! All advice is welcome and greatly appreciated.

Tom

Tom, you might have good connections but a bad cable. Clamp the leads of your volt meter to each end of each cable one at a time and load the battery(hit starter). Since the both leads are on one cable there should be almost no voltage showing under load. When you have it on the bad cable you will see almost full voltage. Also you can load test your batteries by measuring their voltage when you hit the starter. A bad battery can have lots of volts untill you load it, then very little.
