I recently purchased a V30 Ditch Witch Trencher. I would like to find a discussion forum for the ditch witch. Any help would be appreciated.

Roland, I owned a V30 for several years, dug thousands of feet of trench - and became quite a mechanic. They are really a good machine, plenty of power, and pretty reliable. The biggest problem with them is parts availability. They quit making them in about 1981, and many of the parts for them were V30 only. Brakes were the one of the problems. The master cylinders would go bad if you let the machine set very long (even 2-3 months), and if you ever need a drum, you either have to find another machine being parted out, or find a 1940's model Ford car - the pickup won't work, only the cars. I found that most of the parts for it had to be bought from Ditch Witch only, or had to be made at a machine shop. I had a lot of problems here in my area (east central MO) with rock. It was pretty rough on any trencher, and most people wouldn't own one for that reason. But, if it weren't for the local rental yard, I would probably have kept the machine. I just couldn't get a job worth doing when someone could rent a machine for less money than I wanted for the job. All in all, the V30 was one of the best, toughest trenchers Ditch Witch ever built. Good luck, and keep us posted on how you do with it. I don't know of any forums for Ditch Witch machines, but I will keep an eye out for one.

Dale, thanks for the information. I have already experienced the parts issue. I was lucky in that I had a ford transmission handy that worked in the ditch witch. I really appreciate you telling me about the breaks. In my case, in Western Kansas, one must drive for miles to rent a ditcher. I am already getting calls for work...just can't decide what would be a fair price for ditching. We have no rocks...so the digging is hard dirt. What would be a fair price?

Roland, When I quit trenching in 1998, I was getting $1.00 per foot, with an $80.00 minimum. For my area, it was too cheap - but, of course, competitors would cut my throat for a nickel. What width chain do you have? Mine was a 5". I always thought an 8" would have been ideal. How deep will it dig? Mine was 36", but had come originally with a 2'extension to go 5'. I always felt the price per foot should also depend on the width, and the depth. If you have a 4-6" chain, the $1.00 would probably do (I would probably go to $1.25 or $1.50, the way fuel and insurance has gone up), and go up .50 every 2 inches of width. That would be based on a 3' boom. If it is a 5' boom, I would probably go up another .50.
You might check around with local contractors, they could probably tell you what trenching goes for. I hate to tell you something, and it be completely wrong - either you will go broke, or be too high - the way my luck runs.
I wish you lots of luck with your V30. Enjoy it, and I hope this helps you some.
