Thanks for the info. Well, I got the shield off and see that the rod is sheared. The viewable part of the rod looks to be about 1" dia. I haven't got the adjuster off yet. (Needed another bottle of heat and a six-point 15/16ths socket) and haven't gotten back to the machine.
The opposite site looks different (newer design rod?) so that side may have been already replaced. Who knows? Anyway, you certainly didn't waste my time. It is rare
that these follow-up post don't offer some new knowledge. It's guys like you that help to keep the iron turning.
Thank you. Windancer

Thanks for the kind words Windancer. I emphasize that I am not any expert, I simply bought a worn out 450B this winter and have been through the adjusters recently. I will offer advice on small things that I have done myself, but the major things I will leave for the experts. I am very thankful for the advice I have received from the experts on this site.

Hope you get your machine up and running soon. Mine is off to the Case dealer tomorrow for a complete out of frame overhaul. I hate spending any money on this yard ornament, but it scares me to think of putting it to work in the shape it is in. It is blowing about 2 quarts of oil/hour and now is blowing steam too. I am afraid it has a blown head gasket or worse. If worse, then it may be up for sale soon. I would like to try to tackle this myself, but my wife is getting impatient on the basement I promised which was my justification for buying this thing. Oh well, we learn as we live.

Good luck again with your machine. I am sure I will be asking some questions soon as I plan to visit the Case dealer frequently as he rebuilds my motor.
