You don't want to fool with that recoil spring, it will do more than take your head off if it gets away from you while doing so. In the D7 book,( track frame should be the same, just different sizes ) they show the procedure and also show a dimensioned drawing on how to fabricate a device to deal with this spring properly, used in conjunction with a hydraulic press, I believe to compress it, relieve pressure, so you can get the recoil bolt out, which I think is also the adjuster. Although your track adjuster is broke, I beleive there is still compression on that spring, you'll need to fix that adjuster, might pay to have someone do the work,that has the tools to deal with it, get the book that is for your serial number machine, and take a look, you can ask on the a.c.m.o.c bulletin board too, they'll give you some tips on it
