350C Crawler-Dozer skidding winch questions

Just inherited a 350C Crawler Dozer and I am currently going thru the complete machine. I have spent over $2000 so far but my problem remains in the winch. We have installed a new cable, but we are unsure which gear the transmission needs to be in to work the winch. How the heck do you turn this winch on? Any help would be appreciated, along with any tips or ideas for me. Thank you so much. Paul

Make sure the PTO lever is engaged if it has one - some of them don't. The hydraulic reverser must be engaged in forward but it doesn't matter if the gear transmssion is in gear or not. If the hydraulic reverser is in neutral, the PTO shaft won't turn and the winch won't do anything.

Hi Paul,

Did you engage the PTO? There should be a little lever that is located near your left heal/foot below the hour meter. That is where I would start. What year is your 350? -Mark

My crawler is a 1977. I have figured out that it has to be in neutral and the power shift needs to be in forward. The cable winds in fine, but neutral and rewind does not seem to work when the lever is pulled up all the way. Which direction does the cable actually work in? Where location should the lever be in for eutral, to let the spool out? Unfortunately, there is no lettering on any of the levers. Suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks

forward is towards the front of the dozer. All way forward reels it in. Just back of that is neutral. When you release it from forward it should fly back into neutral. All way
back lets it free-spool. You cannot make it go out w/o someone pulling it. That 's the Swampers job.

Paul, A couple of things come to mind. First, I suspect you have a JD model 3315 winch. These are self contained with regard to a pump which actuates clutches to engage winch reel and also a piston which releases the brake.

Be sure the cable (that runs from the control lever by the seat to the hydraulic valve under the seat) does not have much "slop" in the linkage. I have seen these get loose from their mountings (or out of adjustment) which results in too little travel of the control valve spool.

When you pull the winch control lever back then it should allow the winch to "free spool". The lever should remain in this position due to a "detent" in the control valve.

If the winch reels in cable ok when the lever is pushed forward (with the reverser in forward and foot ("clutch") released) but does not release cable to unwind when lever is pulled back, then I would suspect problem with control linkage.

Second, it is possible that you have a Gearmatic model 9 or similar winch and this is a completely different matter that I will not go into here since I hope your have the John Deere type.

Good luck and let us know of your progress.

Just want to add that Deere had a lot of trouble with the little rotary hydraulic control valve on that winch. When it goes bad, first thing that fails (usually) is free spool position. Back in the early 80s, Deere was removing the failed valves and putting on kits to use a better spool type valve. If your machine still has the little rotary valve, keep in mind it can cause a lot of trouble.
