I am looking at purchasing a JD 440 loader from a neighbor who is the original owner. The crawler, other than the paint and the seat, looks to be in very good shape: motor comes right to life every time with no smoke what-so-ever, tracks are like new, controls function without a problem, all hydraulics work well, hoses are a little cracked but not leaking, etc.. The question is, what do I offer for this thing. I will be using it to manage a hiking trail on my farm, building several water holes for wildlife, and just for moving some dirt around. You just never know when you will need an old track loader.

Jerry,
The figures you're getting seem to be pretty much in the ballpark About five years ago, I paid $4,500 for mine. Had to put about $700.00 into it to bring it up to what I consider to be good shape. Good advise about the undercarriage. Use mine around a 71 acre farm for occasional jobs. Never been sorry. Can't have too much equipment or too many tools! Good luck!

Owner will ask 5000+ unless he really likes you or he suffering from something. Thats about what it will bring on the open market. Hope you can beat that but I'd be prepared....Good luck..

gas or diesel?

evaluation of the undercarriage condition is everything in determining price.

good luck!

Appreciate the info. $3,500 is about what I am expecting to have to pay for this thing, but one never knows how negotiations will go with the owner. This is really a sweet little crawler. A new seat and a little paint, and she will suit my needs just fine. Wish me luck!

Sure. Good luck.

The 440 loader I had couldn't keep bearings in the final drive. Got real fast at replacement, with way too much practice. JD dealer ended up telling me to get a larger tractor for my needs as I was over-pushing it. That did solve my problem.

Guy I sold mine to was excited to get it for $5K. Condition was no where near as nice as you describe (few are), but it worked well- until it broke. Subsequent owner had fewer problems, using it in dirt and small trees.

Failed to mention that the crawler has an 831 loader on board, which also works just fine. The mice got to the seat!
