How to identify dozer

I'm looking at buying an old dozer. It's cheap and it runs, but the clutch is bad. He says he thinks its a '48 or '49, but he doesn't know what kind it is. I think its a Cat, but I can't tell if its a D5 or what. It has a GM diesel motor, with no pony motor. I has a heavy duty loader grafted on instead of a dozer blade. I don't know where to look for numbers, but I know I'll need to figure it out when I'm going to get parts. Is there a site that would have good pics of old Cats somewhere that might help me narrow it down? And, where do I look for serial numbers?
Thanks
Paul

Paul: A couple of sites with dozer pictures are listed below. You might find something similar on one of them.
