Allis Hd 4 Good or Bad?

Hi guys,

I've been looking for a smaller dozer to do work around my property while building a house. Might drag some timber as well. A 350 Deere would fit the bill but they are expensive. Would like to be able to tow it on a 1 ton.

I was going to look at an HD 4. Posts on this board seem to be very mixed on how good of a machine they were. Did they have any real problems other than the weak point in the final?

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. I know all the basics about undercarriage. Mostly was looking for specific model info. Anyway, went to an auction yesterday. Looked at a good running/looking HD 4 with heavy logging winch. Needed final drive work as well as pins and bushings. Somebody gave $4200 for it. Seemed steep to me. Thanks.

Jack

We (my Dad)bought a new one in the late '60s; power shuttle clutch, 6-way blade, narrow pads. Had trouble with the torque converter from day one. The problem was unique to that machine and (probably) not to the series. When it was assembled, the screen in the bottom of the sump which supplied the pump had a layer of varnish on it; after a few minutes of operation, the pump would starve for fluid and performance would lag. Took two years with visits from "experts" from all over the country.....with their flow-raters, pressures gauges, etc to pin-point the problem. The machine was never right, even after it was "fixed". The warrantry had long since expired..... .First mistake was buying it from a tractor (rather than industrial/construction equipment)dealer. He insisted we didn't need track/rock guards.....we did; you couldn't keep the tracks on it. We kept it about 20 years; for its size, I suppose it was all right; just always made us wish we had gotten a larger machine. Don't know when they quit making them..... you're looking at a (approximately) 40 year old machine/design. We pulled it behind (not on) a one-ton pickup.

Although it's now quite as big and
powerful and heavy as an HD5 or 350 JD, but you can't beat a Case 350 for simplicity,
easy to work on, parts still available
and can pull with a 3/4 ton pickup.
I throughly research small dozers and
have never regreted buying a Case 350.
Steering componets and undercarriage
are of utmost importance when buying.
