Crank broke at # 4 rod journal. Engine only has around 500 hours since short block was installed. Couple places we have talked to says this is common problem with the 188 engine. Any ideas or suggestions? Any info on removing this engine easier would greatly be appreciated.

Use to be caused from and improper grind on the journals. When grinding the journals down, the journals need a chamfer at the edges instead of a nice squared edge. I'm surprised you got that many hours out of it, usually last around 100 hours or less.
