Doug, The filter is located on the underside of the reverser case and is removed by unbolting a retainer plate from the right side of the machine. If your machine has a belly pan then you can access this plate from across the roller frame on the right side. You should see a bulge with four bolts facing your at the bottom of the reverser case This will be roughly behind the track return roller area. There is a drain plug on the bottom of this bulge and it can be accessed thru a hole from underneath the belly pan. However, this plug can be a problem to get out since it is sometimes plugged with dirt and an allen wrench will not fit it properly. In that case, remove the four bolts from the filter retainer plate. Best to loosen bolts but leave them in place while you pry the cover from its gasket but be prepared to catch the 3+ gallons of oil which runs out and onto the belly pan. (Good luck with that!) After you remove the plate. (I think there's a spring behind it) and the filter, take a little kerosene or diesel and wash out the sludge from the sump area underneath where the filter sets. Assemble in reverse order and fill with John Deere transmission oil if available. I don't know what substitute oil to use if JD isn't available. But the cost of JD oil and filter is about the same as any good grade of oil and filter so use JD if you can. Good luck.
