My son brought home a John Deere 24 T Skidsteer that belongs to a friend of his. It has a 4 cyclinder Wisconsin engine and the engine has a bad plug wire that keeps shorting out. It does not seem to have a lot of power. The bucket lifts fine and is not slow.
We need to get a manual for it, but in the mean time I have a couple of questions.
Is the hydraulic power for the bucket the same as it is for the drive train? I am assuming that the wheels are driven hydraulically.
Are these reliable machines?
What could cause this machine to have a tough time just crawling up on a trailer?
Is it possible that the hydraulic pump or the hydraulic motor to be worn out and need rebuilding? Are the rebuild kits expensive?

Clutch packs are available from John @ 281-431-5623 or e-mail jdixxon@aol.com for 476.00. I also have a JD 24 that I rebuilt including the VG4D Wisconsin. I have the complete tech manual on CD, If you have questions about a specific unit I could e-mail you the Info. Dave

I would be very interested in getting some info from your JD24 technical manual CD, or purchasing one. Thanks.

I have a jd 24 which I use daily. I have a hoe attachment for it also. These machines were belt drive, much like a snowmaobile. This drive system is poor to say the best. I just had all new drive shafts machined and replaced one steering clutch (so far). Finding parts is also extremely difficult. Your machine may not move well do to worn out steering clutches. New clutches are @ $800.00 each from john deere, and it requires 4. The hydriclics maybe slow to a clogged filter since the oil bath for the drive train is also the oil for hydraulics. Please contact me if you need help and even wish to sell yours. (always need parts)

Your machine was not built by New Holland. Only the 200 hundred series were. Look under the seat. Is there a large drive belt? If so, it is mechanical drive, not hydrostatic. Speed is by a variator lever on the left side similar to the throttle lever.

Don't know why the problem with the one wire/cylinder. The engine could be just tired. But need to check things like air cleaner, carburetor, timing, etc.

I have a 170, but believe yours is just the next generation or industrial version (different paint, ie yellow)

Having never saw a JD 24 T skid steer but having a good working knowledge of skid steers I'll try to answer your questions. First thing to do is get the engine running as good as possible, it's probably not but about 20 hp with it firing on a 4 cyls. You will have a separate pump to operate the boom functions, to drive the wheels usually takes a hydraulic pump and hydraulic motor for each side. From what I know New Holland built John Deere skid steers up until just a few years ago, so reliability I have no clue. It is very possible that it has drive problems and the drive system is the most expensive thing you will get into on a skid steer. I recently done pumps and motors on an old New Holland (rather I removed and installed them, had a hydraulic shop do the rebuilding) to the tune of over $3000 it was far more than the machine was worth.
