Cat 3208 timing advance

I read a post here from about a year ago where someone was inquiring about a Cat 3208 and lots of gray smoke and generally weak performance. I am currently in the middle of repairs on a Ford dump truck w/ cat 3208 that has the same problems. The original problem was that the cam gear had about 1/4 of the teeth stripped, and the timing advance is attached directly to that gear. After installing a new cam gear and timing the engine 3 times it still runs poorly.

In the discussion I read someone commented that the timing advance is a weak link in the 3208 and that, if the springs were broken, it would cause problems. I now have the advance mechanism pulled out of my truck but need to know what it should look like if it's broken or functional. It seems like everything inside is floating around, suggesting broken springs but I'm not sure. If anyone can describe what a broken mechanism would look like I'd much appreciate it.

Also in the other discussion someone mentioned that "I.P.D." had the part for substantially less than CAT. Can someone give me the website/contact info for this company.

Thank you,

Matt

Matt, if you can rotate the shaft bore in relation to the gear teeth by hand I think you need a new one. I don't remember if it was you or not that got the truck that had been used inside a building and just idled a lot. If so did you find the exh ports carboned up badly?
