I have a mustang 320 skidsteer with a twin cylinder oposing onan motor. and it locked up I took it apart and found that the magnet cover in the fly wheel a piece broke off and wedged between the stator and magnet. they want 275.00 for a new one, so far the dealer didnot think they could just replace the magnet assembly. But in all reality the magnet is still set, can the flywheel be run without the piece covering the one magnet?

i have a onan 2 cylinder with a aluminum block. ran good but had to start it with a drill and socket on the flywheel nut because the electric starter mount corroded off the block. it was mounted on a log splitter. if you are interested in buying the whole engine let me know.

I'm not intimately familiar with all the different models that Onan makes, but I have worked on a few and I can tell you for certain that they are proud of the parts for all of them, and the older the engine the higher the cost. Just be glad the part you need is only $275, it could be ALOT worse. Now as to your question, if there is a piece missing out of the flywheel you really shouldn't run it. I say this because the flywheel is a dynamically balanced part and trying to run it with a missing piece is gonna throw it out of balance. This is gonna cause at least an abnormal vibration, and eventually it'll cause premature wear to the engine, etc. As long as it isn't cracked or damaged to the point that it absolutely can't be used then you might be able to have it balanced like it is and go ahead and use it. The only problem there is by the time you go through the time and expense to have someone balance it your most likely getting close to the cost of a new one. We ran into one several years ago that was cracked and a replacement was way more than $275. Some idiot had tried heating it and putting a oversize puller on it to get it off and had cracked the center of it in several places. We were able to get it welded up as well as making a bolt on reinforcement plate just to give it a little more strength. Fortunately for us we knew a guy that did balancing that was able to do that part for us for nothing. That was about 5 years ago and to last I heard the old welder it was attached to was still doing just fine. Good luck.
