Well after many weeks of preperation and planning I was able to get my HD9 home yesterday. What a relief!!!! It is goin to be a long raod back to a runner but all the parts are there. First thing I'd like to do is get some Marvels oil in the top end to free up the pistons. I believe some water has found it's way into the engine thru a badly covered exhaust stack. Took a side inspection cover off and I see rust, not a good sign but want to try and free this thing up,,,any help is MUCH appreciated,Mike

To pull the head you need to take the top off the governor and disconnect the linkage that goes to the rack. then unbolt the governor 2 bolts on the head and 4 on the blower. then unbolt the rack 4 bolts 2 on each end of the head. The injectors are the middle rocker arm. take the steel fuel lines off. Then take the injrctor hold down off of each injector. It has 1 3/8 bolt then you can pop the injector out. They should just lift out by hand but with the rust you may have to pry them out. Do not take the spring and plunger out of injector. unless you mark them they must go back in the same injector. When you go back together you will need to set the rack and time the injectors. They make a tool for this it is inexpensevive but different modles have different settings 1.465 is common. If you get a manual it will tell to do this. This is a 2 cycle engine and you would have to fill up the whole engine to get oil to the pistons thru the intake it takes the air in from those holes it the lower part of the cyl. you can see them with the hand hole covers off.

If you see rust, you probably need to pop the head off and get the valves redone.

Then you can see how bad the pistons are
and what not. Put the head back on before you try to get the crank moving or the sleeves will pop out.

Thanks gm,,,is it that easy to take the heads off? I'm no detroit mech and have never delt with them. I picture lots of little thing-a-ma-jigs springing everywhere. I took the valve cover off and I see 3 rocker arms with a pair of small hardlines for each cyl. Along one side there is a long rod that has a small rods going to a fitting on each cyd the long rod goes out to some type of throttle control. Can you fill me in on what all this is, and where is the injector, can I pull it and put some oil in the cyl. I'm looking for some books to help sorry for the rookie questions,Mike

Removing a head isn't that hard a job. The
springs won't jump out at you. You should
remove anything connected to the outside of the head, then the head bolts(and anything
in the way of the them). If things don't look rusted up under the valve cover, then don't bother taking the heads off.

I am not familiar with your machine but I
would think you could get oil in through
the air intake easier.
