Noise when turning D3b

On a D3b Cat, I get a noise that sounds like the fan hitting something when I turn left backing up, and when turning right going forward. Kind of a matallic tapping kind of noise. Have not been able to tell where it originates, except that it's definitely up in the front somewhere. Not a continuous thing--just 3 or 4 taps each time, usually.

Any ideas what to look for or where to look?? It just started this yesterday.

Thanks for your help.

Jim

I'm not 100% sure how the hardnose on a 3B is attached, but I have seen other machines where the bolts holding the nose on have gotten a little loose. When your moving and the frame is flexing, this allows everything attached to the nose, including the shroud and fan guard, to move a little more than normal allowing it to get into the fan. Check the tips of the fan blade as well as around the inside edge of the radiator shroud for any freshly shined/skint places where the two might have come into contact with each other. Like you said it doesn't have to be something that happens all the time, it just depends on the frame flexing enough to make it happen. Good luck.
