Gents,While shopping for a used dozer that we require I ran across a used 850 John Deer mid 80's model. The machine looks to be in good condition. The under carriage is what I would call 80% ( 20% worn ) The tractor at one time had some sort of heating problem but was diagnosed with a plugged radiator and repaired by the local JD dealer. This was before the under carriage was replaced. Total hrs. according to the owner is about 7000 hrs. After working the machine for about an hour we did not notice any over haeting. It looks to be a well maintained machine and is not beat up. It also has a 6 way blade.
My question (s)are:
1.) What is a fair price for this machine? The asking price is $20000.00.
Is there any basic fault with this model John Deer?
Thanx, Earl

Earl, I can't say about the prices, but try to get a complete maintenance history if possible. That tractor is a hydrostat, and at 7,000 hours is at the upper end of the life expectancy for the drive system. If the hydrostat system hasn't been rebuilt yet, I personally would run from it. They are nice dozers and a pleasure to operate, but when the hydrostat fails you will buy it again, you can easily spend $10,000 - $20,000 in a hydrostat. I can think of three recent examples in my area.

Curious, would you spend that much on a basic overhaul of clutchs, seals, and o-rings? Or is that takiing it to a dealership and having them fix it? I know buying a rebuilt HLR for a 450 will run you $5000, but you can do it yourself reasonable, if the hard parts are good. There are 2 dealerships near me and both will estimate a repair as if they are going to replace every single part not just wear parts like clutches. There a little bit of a crook, once it's apart if you don't agree, you can't exactly tow it home. And they will use aftermarket foriegn parts and charge you JD price for them!

I have rebuilt several hydrostatic transmissions and from my experiences , Go find a nice D-6 or D-7 dozer ...Deere makes a nice dozer , but as time wears on , internal linkages wear slightly, servo s leak slightly, relief valves leak slightly, springs loose tension in control valves, I have spent many hours adjusting and tweeking to try to make 'em run straight. Some do , some don't..some will , some won't..
Its almost impossible to make two seperate transmissions to act identically. You will see "c" patterns , " s " patterns before you will find a straight one...
