I have a jd450b and it is getting water in the oil, I know that it could be a blown head gasket, but it is also blowing smoke out on the bottom right side of the engine. Oil also drips out with this smoke. I cannot see exactly where the smoke is comming from but it appears to be between the engine and the starter around the bell housing. What could be my problem or problems and what would cause this to happen?

The smoke and oil your seeing would have to be coming from the blow-by tube, it's just a metal tube that comes from the top of the valve cover and vents gases that build in an engine to the atmosphere. However when the engine gets worn to an extent that enough compression is leaking by the rings that it carries oil out the blow-by tube as well, it's time for a rebuild. Water in oil may be from a few things of course you mentioned a head gasket, a cracked head or cylinder liner o-rings, cracked block would be a possibility not a probability, perforated liners would do it too. Electrolosis (sp?) causes liner perforation to make a long story short it's when the coolant gets an electron charge and takes microscopic pieces of metal off the outside of the liner till it finally makes a hole in it, there is a coolant additive to add that prevents this.

Thanks for the quick answer, but lets hope that it isn"t perforated cylinders. How do the cylinders get perforated?

Pin holes in cylinder liners are most often caused by "cavitation erosion"... It is a MAJOR problem with JD diesel engines (and probably others, too), and can be prevented with coolant conditioners sold at auto parts stores (NapKool from Napa is one brand), or a special water filter with a conditioning chemical in it... I've installed coolant filter/conditioners units on every tractor that I have ever had after having holes eroded in my first JD350 back in the seventies. I can't believe that the JD owners' manuals do not stress how important that it is to use these conditioners! For a couple of extra bucks they could make coolant filters standard on all their tractors and eliminate the problem at the factory. The fix is to replace the liner(s) and hope that the block is not all eroded away, too.

Most likely lack of maintaince on the cooling system. There is an additive for diesel engines with cylinder liners to prevent perforation/rust out. Coolant should be changed each year and new anti-rust additive put in. There is no such thing as permanent antifreeze. I forget the name that I used, but it's sold at Car Quest Auto Parts. There are also test strips you can dip in the antifreeze to see if it needs changing or additive put in. I'm sure there are others on the board who can give you brand names or any place that sells diesel parts locally including JD can fill you in on this maintaince. If you have the OP book look in there.
