more questions on another crawler i found. i'm just a newbie and hope to find some type of used crawler by next spring. this one is an old HD6. it isn't much to look at, but it runs and the loader seems to work well. needless to say the undercarriage has seen better days. the bearing in one of the front idlers is shot, and actually the entire idler from the big threaded adjuster forward could probably use a replacement (the idler wheel itself looks okay). one of the sprockets is very worn, the other can be used for a while longer. both chains are bad (bushings are starting to wear through in several places). the growsers are okay for now, but probably the best solution would be two good used tracks to include everything. the rollers on the bottom of the undercarriage had a lot of dirt around them, so i couldn't get a good look at them, but i would guess they are marginal. there is one problem that i don't know how to describe because i am not familiar with crawler terminology. the portion of the undercarriage frame with the six bottom rollers has a support that goes to the main crawler frame and goes up to a top idler. this support looks like it was welded to the frame with the six rollers in it. the weld is now cracked. the guy selling the crawler said there are bolts that normally hold this piece on, but the bolts and mounting holes get worn and then a lot of times this support just gets welded on. is this true, and how serious is this? also the brakes need to be adjusted. i'm just looking to move a bunch of dirt around and level some hills out. i think this machine would be usable as-is for a short time until i gathered up the repair parts (the one idler bearing should probably be replaced though).

so what type of reputation does the HD6 have? i haven't found a lot of negative posts on them. for some guy to use to move some dirt around and lift heavy things up in the air would something like this work? what would one in this condition be worth, or is it considered pretty far gone? also, the guy selling it said the best way to replace the sprocket is to cut the outer ring off and weld on a good used one. it looks like it would be a major project to replace the sprocket by disassembling everything and doing it the "correct" way. if you went to look at an old HD6 and the seller said this, would it give you a warm fuzzy feeling, or would it make you think you should run far away?

HD6 is a good rugged machine, but . . . the kind of work and repairs you're talking about would exceed the cost of another HD6 in good shape. I've come across some pretty nice ones in the $5000 price range (with new undercarriage and perfect steering and engine). The 344 Buda engine the HD6 uses is a very good engine. An HD6 in the condition you describe can be had here in New York State for $1000 - $1500.

Nice to see you posting JD, I haven't seen you on here in a while and was wondering if all was well with you. I still have intentions of doing some hydraulic work on my JD400 backhoe this fall and was hoping you'd be available to answer questions. Anyway, its nice to see you on here, and I hope all is going well for you.

thanks guys, that's kind of what i was thinking. i guess my problem is that i'd like to get something i could use for a month or two, and then work on it until spring. either that, or find one of those nice $5000 ones and pay $500 a month on it until next spring.
:-)
