350b, No brakes!!

The steering clutches and hand brakes work fine. The foot brake goes to the floor with no effect. I used to be able to set and lock the brake. Now there is nothing. I tried to adjust the linkage under the floorboards but still, nothing. Is there brake fluid somewhere???
I am new to dozers and am certainly learning to get my hands dirty. First the track comes off and I have to learn to put that on, then I get a limb in the fan and it burns up the fan belt so I pull the front cowling off and change that. I have adjusted the steering clutches and now that works. Now there are no brakes. What else can happen??
I needs some direction please!!??!!
Thanks,
MrBill

Sounds as if the pins might have fallen out of brake rod that goes thru front of steering clutch housing.. someone maybe forgot to install cotter pins ?? or maybe the elongated holes on the brake rod wore thru.. maybe but not likely.. The final drives might have to come off to repair..Get a manual,,Its your best insurance for a novice to do his own repairs..

Thanks Roy. I have all the manuals; Operators, Parts and Service. I even have the Operators manual for the 93 Series backhoe (it is not attached to the dozer at the moment).
Still need somemore direction please.

Mr Bill,

I'm sure you checked and made sure that the rod from the brake pedal is attached to the bell crank/crossover shaft on the tranny housing under the operator's seat.

Next, make sure there are rods from each steering clutch housing attached to this bell crank on each side.

It is very likely that a rod has come loose inside one steering clutch housing but the rod from the other housing is out of adjustment.

You can check by taking the pin from the clevis at the crossover and see how much travel these rods have.

I suspect you will find a lot of travel, especially if one or both are loose inside the steering clutch housing.

Hopefully, you can loosen the lock nut and turn the clevis to shorten rod travel so the foot brake will at least engage the brake on one side.

Look at the service manual instructions for adjusting the brake rods coming from the steering clutch housings and this will better illustrate the procedure than I can.

If this does not solve your problem then the next step is to remove the final drive and determine whats loose in the brake mechanism.

Good luck,

Do you have to crawl under the dozer to do this? There is a LOT of slack front and back with the right linkage. I could not tell (by feel) if it was engaged or not. I agree, it felt like something was not engaged or was out.
I'll look at the pictures and see what I can see.
Thanks,
MrBill

Mr. Bill,
Pull up the floor board underneath the steering clutch levers and remove the seat cushion. You can access the brake rods from there.

One rod is on each side of the transmission case and runs back into the steering clutch housing.

Keep us advised of progress or questions.

Thanks. I had the floorboards up and the seat off while I was adjusting the steering clutches. The right side is buried in hydraulic hoses, so I haven't been working on that side much. And fortunatly it was the left side the steering needed adjusting anyway.
I cannot get out to the dozer but on rare weekends. I'll check to see where or what is going on with these brake rods the next time I am out.
Thanks,
MrBill
