Many questions about an HD5G

I'll be away for a couple of days, so I won't be able to respond, so let me thank anyone who responds in advance. Here are the questions. The serial number is HD5G18154. What will that tell me about the year and such? What does the G signify? Does anybody have any Auburn clutch parts? I've found everything but the three retract bolts, springs and springholders (cups). Also the "spider" part of the throwout bearing is wallered out. I welded it up and can redrill it, but was wondering if somebody might have a good one before I do. Hopefully it wasn't case hardened or something - and the heat of welding messed that up. I assume the retract bolts are case hardened, if not, I'll turn some grade 8's on a lathe to get the right shape. Does anybody have a repair manual (to sell) on these? I'll need something to go by when setting up the clutch, unless someone here can give me an overview. It hasn't moved in nearly two years, should I do anything special prior to engaging the final drive to make sure it gets loosened up? Thanks again!
Paul

My AC book shows that as a 1953. Not sure about the "G", but my guess is that it simply means grouser track as opposed to street pads.

i've just recently been looking at various crawlers (get the itch to maybe get one), and from what i've found, the G means it was a track loader. as opposed to a standard HD5 dozer. i hope the original poster noticed if a large loader was attached to the front of his crawler.

Yes, it is a track loader, but I wasn't sure if that had been grafted on later - it looks like there was some of that kind of work done to it somewhere along the line. Thanks for the info. What can you tell me about the engines that they used in '53? Thanks.

Paul,

i looked at several HD5 (and HD5G) machines lately, and they all looked like they had some "work" done on them (if you know what i mean). the ones i looked at had the 2 cyl Detroit (GM) diesels. i think when the engine was switched to the 4 cyl. diesel they made a few other changes and called the machine the HD6. i haven't heard mention of a gasoline engine, but i don't know if there was such a thing.

that's about all the help i can offer as i'm new to the crawler world. the HD5 looks like a workhorse though.
