I need help Guys:
I am currently restoring a cat 22. I have one major problem that is stumping all of us. Tractor hadn't been run in many years. After cleaning up fuel tank, lines and carburetor, and changing fluids I got it started. It has plenty of compression and will start every time on first or second pull but will only run with choke almost fully on and of course it doesn't have much power or great variance in throttle control like this. I Have checked and set timing, rebuilt the fuel pump (it has plenty of flow and pressure) and have cleaned and rebuilt the carburetor twice including drilling out capped passages cleaning ,checking and recapping them. The fuel bowel is full and the carburetor has enough vacuum to suck the shirt off your back but apparently the fuel is not getting up into the Venturi. The carburetor seems to be complete in referencing it with the book I have although I have no way of checking if it has the correct jets and orifices. Do you have any hints as to what the problem is or know anyone who checks or rebuilds this type of zenith updraft carburetor. Any help or information you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Lowell

Can someone tell me who made the caterpillar pony motor used for starting the old diesels, like on the D-4. Is there a service manual for the pony motor?

Thanks,
smitty

Here's a link to Midland Press, good quality reproductions, they handle Caterpillar's Legendary Literature program.

Caterpillar manufactured all the starting engines for their diesel engines, and the information you need is the Serviceman's reference book and Parts manual, specific to the serial number of the machine, be sure to write that number down, it's usually on the left side of the engine and on the left rear of the tractor above the final drive, you can find manuals for these if you go to the following links, I'll use another thread to post the other link

Lowell: One possibility that I"ve seen on other engines: are you running it without the air cleaner in place? This can cause too much air to enter the system, resulting in a lean combustion mixture and symptoms such as you describe. Also, if it"s an oil-bath system, make sure the oil is the correct weight and that the correct amount is in the cleaner. Another thought is that there"s an air leak in your carburetor, either at the gasket or around one of the rods (throttle, choke, etc.) entering the carb.

Leak around intake manifold could be another possibility.
