I work for a rural municipality and take care of fifteen miles of dirt and gravel roads. I"m self taught and may be way off base here, but I do my rough grading and shaping of shoulders by windrowing everything into a pile in the center of the road. I will cut the right side to center ,then cut the left to center. I then straddle the windrow with my tires, roll my moldboard forward to distribute the gravel out under the blade and angle the outer edge back and lay out a nice topcoat from the crown to one side. I then repeat from the crown to the other side. I run an old JD 570A with a 12foot blade and I can run down the road with the dressing coat in fourth or 5th gear if I can keep my fingers moving on the controls to follow my contours. We cover a good bit of ground in a day this way. However We also stop to fork out some of the rocks I might just find in the shoulders from time to time.

I run a Deere 770A and a Cat 140G and have noticed similar problem. I didn’t notice this possibility mentioned, but my cure (in addition to wheel lean, tire pressure, etc) is a blade extension and turning the blade angle as far as I can to get the most diagonal cut for feathering as possible. This doesn’t allow much material to build up on the moldboard, but the beneficial offset is that you are using as much of the length of the blade for leveling out the material when feathering, If possible, I articulate and get one side of the grader over the crown of the road where I have a smooth surface to keep at least one side of the grader stable.

The rocking from side to side (I call it duck-walking) might be caused from running the blade at the same angle every pass. If I can’t cure it any other way, I will go to the opposite end and start which then angels the blade to 90 degrees from the passes made coming the other way.

Good luck, hope this helps!

Make sure all tires have equal pressure, -just a few lbs. soft. Use as much blade-roll as material will allow and let it build up in front of the blade. Wheel-lean and crabbing will also help if your patrol can be articulated. Don't get in a hurry and experiment. --Good luck!

That front weight could be causing some problems; playing with tire pressure sometimes helps. I like to us the blade tilt and tilt the blade far forward when spreading the windrow. I have also used the leaning wheels tilted far to one side to slow down bounce.

Dan: I can"t help much on the specifics of this problem, but this condition in general is known as "loping" and is very common on graders and other big rubber-tired equipment. I believe that Goodyear had an article on their website dealing with it, and by searching Google for "loping" you may turn up other results.

Hey Dan, I work w/ the Cat dealer here. Most of the time w/us it is tire problems. Have you checked all your pressures? Are tires evenly matched? Just a few things to check, hope it might help!
