Been searching the archives and other web sources for information on a winch for a John Deere MC crawler. Read in a list of tools and attachments in one book that one was available, but know nothing about brand, type, or rarity. Never seen a diagram or picture of one mounted. Would also be interested in what others may have done by way of adapting non-original equipment to their early crawler, whether by using the PTO or hydraulics.
Thanks for any help.

I have a Gearmatic 8A winch that goes on my 40C. I don"t know if one would fit on a MC as it bolts directly to the rear of the transmission housing in place of the rear cover and those covers are different on the 40 and MC.

Since this is my first machine, I don't know all the variables. I wondered at first whether any other attachments used the mount where the belt drive take-off is, but figured it was kind of high up and a little light duty for a winch.
Thanks...RTM

I have one of the winches that were used on an MC. They are driven off of the PTO shaft with a roller chain.
I can"t remember the brand right off hand, but it is an old name that you would recognize.

would it be Braden? There were many of these on military rigs and after WWII there many surplus and they were adapted to all kinds of things.

Lavoy; I figured you might have seen one sometime in your travels. If you stumble across the one you have, I'd love a description and/or a photo. (It doesn't show up on your photo pages, does it?) I suppose it would be useful to know if it is a common model with just minimal adaptation done, or a real unique case, mount points, etc.
Thanks for the help;

I can"t remember if it was a Braden, I will try and look today.
No, there is really nothing unique about it, it mounts with bolts in the front and back, so a frame work needs to be built that holds it, and mounts to the drawbar and track clutch housings.
No, I don"t have any pics of it up. If I think of it, I will take a pic of it today. I don"t have it here, but will be out where it is today.

Didn"t get a pic, but looked at the tag, it is a Garwood winch.

Garwood was used on many of the 3/4 ton military trucks. A decent winch and parts are probable avaailbe through Memphis Equipment and others.
