Just bought at auction a Cat 12 vintage of about 51. Has bearing out on left drive axle . How much should the old machine weigh ? can the bearing be changed without pulling the tandom unit off? was I super crazy to buy it???? Am about as knowledgeable on it as a sycamore fence post,realy need help.

Seems this machine, if it is a 212, was around 13,000# plus a little, if my memory serves me well from manuals i used when I had a real job.

Thanks alot Greg,had about given up on any reply.Since My post I checked with CAT about a book on it. Cost was about $235 ,man suggested the money would be better spent hiring a heavy equipment mechanic,just last night think I have found one. It's an 8T ## and parts are still available which is Good.Guess the old CATs are kinda like Ford N's.

51 vintage should be a model 212. If it is, need to pull covers on tandem housing, disconnect chain, then remove wheel, tire, stub shaft retainers, etc. Wheel hub can be real tough to get off.
