My left steering clutch is bad, it is rusted so that the plates do not release. I am trying to remove the clutch. I have the drive gear for the final drive pulled out. But I cannot get the inner shaft out. Is the inner shaft held in with a lock or is there a keeper. Or am I blessed with a rusted in inner shaft that I have to get out some how. Puzzled and bewildered.

That would be the clutch drive shaft. If you cannot get it out with a slide hammer, try pulling the other side final pinion and clutch drive shafts out and then use a heavy long bar THROUGH the right side to tap the left clutch drive shaft out. Once you break it free this way, the slide hammer will finish the job for you.

Been there.

Steve,
On crawlers before 42,000, there is a set screw that goes in the end of the drive shaft, and expands 3 little pins under a snap-ring. I think you have to remove the set screw, but the service manual is less than clear on this subject. Once you have the set screw out, you might be able to thread a long bolt in the hole to have something to pull against, or gently use a slide hammer.

Lavoy is correct. I had the same problem about 4 years ago. Someone here told me about the small screw. the screw has to be removed or you will never get it out. i made a slide knocker out of threaded oil stock and got mine out that way. i tried the knocker several times before i was told about the screw. after i took it out the shaft came out fairly easy.

When they rust like this, can they be cleaned and freed? Or is replacement needed? I am thinking of the old drum brakes that would fade when wet but dry out. Is the clutch material ruined by moisture?

What happens is that they absorb the moisture and expand to the point that they cruch the fingers of the pressure plate al the way down on to the pressure plate itself. They also rust themselves to the steel discs and often times ruin them too. I would not run a disc that has been that wet. There will not be the correct thickness, and I don"t think they will be as strong anymore. New discs are not that expensive compared to the work of taking it all apart to fix.

Yes the labor is a good point. Can the moisture cause weak steering on one side or would that be more likely wear? This is a 350 so not the same machine.

I don"t beleive they are held in with anything. Probably rusted. If you need discs we have new ones available.
