Looking at a machine with bad winch an A or B jd 450. Service notes say PTO shaft is stripped. Checked the control cable and it's moving at the winch, can anyone explain what the cable moves--a hydraulic valve looks like? Assuming the pto shaft is bad--is it removable from the rear or am i looking at going into the final drives, transmission, clutch housing? The shop manual is vague, i believe the pto is driven off the input shaft on the 450. Can anyone tell me how to isolate the problem? Thanks.

Get a heavy duty nylon strap and wrap it around the winch at a middle point across the winch. Loosen the mounting bolts and pull winch from back of machine, carefully pull winch away from back of machine and disconnect control cable. You will now see whats stripped..The shaft will come out the back with out a lot of work..

It is a 450 B. The pto control lever is missing. Possibly more of the parts inside the clutch housing that engage the pto powershaft. Anyone know sources for used parts or have them 4 sale?

Hey Roy, i called and left a message, hopefully he will have something for me. You were right, today with a helper i could see the pto shaft is turning. So the winch needs to come off to see damaged parts. Thanks.
