So, I climb up there in the seat of my 1957 420-C, skooch down in the nice new covers my wife made for the seat I built, and pull the handles. (Since I am rebuilding the top end, it just sits there anyway). When I pull the handle and/or step on the peddle on the left, they move freely. When I pull the handle and/or step on the peddle on the right, they move an inch or so. This tractor was parked in sort of running condition. It has been out in the weather for four years. May I purchase a clue, please?

Yardpilot,
This is going to sound stupid, so bear with me. Did you know that a 420 has coordinated steering and does not use pedal operated turning brakes? Left hand pedal is clutch, right hand is operational brake.
I am not trying to be a wise acre or anything like that, but I have had several questions just like yours before, and the new owner was unaware of how the 2 cylinder Deere crawlers operated and was used to Cat, Allis or IH.

Lavoy,

Perfectly reasonable questions. The answer is yes. My concern is that right handle not moving much.

I just got a big load of worry off. Compression was zero on 1, 35-40 on 2. I pulled the head. Fun. Bolts were worn down to between sizes. A hammered on 13mm and impact wrench finally did the trick, except for the one someone WELDED on. The air chisel took care of that. I cracked the head bolts loose with a bar, then they turned out with finger pressure.

There was an oil bath air filter in place when I started this project. I don't know where how or when, but 2 and half the manifold were packed with paper toweling, and 1 was about half. Weird. The cylinders are as smooth as a baby's heinie. Not a mark, no ridge, nothing. The piston tops have a tiny bit of carbon. Number 1 exhaust was sticking and high, so I pulled it. It was well carboned. I cleaned it up, took the Dremel to the carbon build up, and dropped it back in. It slid in perfectly. I filled both chambers with cleaner, and it hadn't dropped in an hour. Looking good. I'm going to run the valves just on accounta I've got it down this far.
