I looked at a jd 1010 dozer for sale. It looked good and started right up but two things bothered me. The left side track frame had been cut and rewelded just ahead of the sprocket. Also, when running forward in a straight line (viewed from the back) the right track bowed inward just ahead of the sprocket before straightening out before it passed over the top idler. A close examination of the machine showed that the right-side sprocket had a thinner cross section than the left, about 1/2 inch less measured across the width of the tooth, and the left side ran in the middle of the last idler while the right side all but touched the inside of the idler. Any ideas as to what may be wrong would be welcome. Thanks, Peter

Peter,
Best guess would be that the right hand axle bearings are bad, and the sprocket is thinner because it has been rubbing on the inside of the rear roller.

Lavoy,
Thanks, I hadn't thought about the bearings. That might also explain why the left side track frame has been cut. I don't know enough about replacing the axle bearings to know if that is a quick and dirty way of getting at them for replacement. If the axle bearings are worn maybe that would cause the track to run out of line as it comes off the sprocket.
