We've just finished replacing the final drive seal on a 650G for the 9th time in six years and are getting disgusted, I'm wondering if anyone else is having a similar problem? Every time we pull it down, we find a ball of plastic hay string embedded in the rubber portion of the seal. After the first couple of times, we installed the guards for the landfill package on the axles and it seems to help, but nothing will stop the string from getting in. This machine runs about 1,000 hours a year doing general dozer work (clearing, ponds, forestry site prep, and clearing fencerows) and it's impossible to avoid the string. Also, wire of any kind doesn't seem to bother it. A 450G doing the same work hasn't had any problems either. We have all of the appropiate manuals and follow them to the letter when affecting repairs. The local dealer seems to think we're doing something wrong, but the third time it went out, we sent the final to the dealer and they used a cutting torch to remove the ouboard bearing... six months later the axle broke at the bearing. I'm not sure I want them working on it anymore. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Also, the 650 is a LGP, the 450 is not. Sorry for being long winded, But it has reached the point that it will probly be traded on a Cat D5M very soon. Thanks for any help!
