Case 188

Connecting rod came looose on one side and punched a hole in the block near the fuel filters.

I have been told that sometimes these engines can have a patch welded on the block. Is this possible in your opinion? It is a flat spot where the damage occured. The hole is about 2" round.

I would drill a small hole at ends of cracks, if any.
A weld shop in the area specializes in such welding. They put the block in a bed of sand and preheat it in a oven. After the welding its back into the oven to cool slowly. Quick cooling of cast iron after a weld is what causes cracks to run wild. If one guy worked a torch while the other guy welded with Ni-rod. Seems that might be a home brew worth trying?
Best, Dennis....

if there are no radiating cracks, and the block is still sound otherwise, its a piece of cake. it can be welded, silver soldered, or brazed. i've done all 3 in different circumstances. i would even think jb weld would work just to seal the hole.

This repair can definitely be done. I've been running a case 310g/188 with the exact same repair having been done by the previous owner. It has lasted three years and still going. Good luck
