Case 310E Crawler Problem

The last time I used my crawler, when I placed it in 1st gear and let out on the clutch, it was though the brake was on. The engine bogged down, and there was no forward motion.

When I placed it in 2nd gear, it went forward with no problems. When I placed it in reverse, it went backwards ok, but there was a gringing/clanking noise as I went backwards.

Anyone have any clues where to start? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Brad

As to where to start? Remove the fuel tank. Make sure you plug the fuel lines to keep the dirt out. Block your machine at the crossmember in it's center. Bust your tracks and try to leave a little track sticking out behind so you can roll the rearend out on them. Remove the drive shaft. Then unbolt the rearend and final drives from the crawler as a unit. The whole finaldrive/differential assembly will tend to fall forward so you need to support it with something under the transmission case. I leave the sprockets on so I can roll the whole thing on them. You'll need some help all this stuff is real heavy. You can get at all the transmission gears now by taking the gearshifter off. After this point you need a manual or you need to be a good transmission mechanic. Those needle bearing on the reverser shaft are way up in the back corner of the trans case and if I remeber correctly you have to pull the rearend's guts out to get to the bolt that holds the shaft upon which the needle bearing are. My advice is to replace all the bearings and seals in the rearend, transmission, and final drives while you got the thing apart. But that's just my lazyness showing. Good wrenching.

We do these all the time. Just a lot of wrenching, nuts and bolts, but not difficult. It is a common problem with the reverse idler gear, bearings and shaft. If you need parts to repair this, we stock gears, bearings, seals. We also have manuals. Email me if you'd like more information.

the reverse noise is probably bad needle bearings on the reverse countershaft. its also possible the shaft is loose in the transmission. mine has this problem. the holes in the transmission housing that the countershaft sits in are elongated and the shaft jumps around a bit. since first and reverse use the same gear, the first problem is probably related to the reverse shaft also. hope this helps, and by the way its a real bear to remove and rebuild. i did it last summer.

Jim/Pa is right. I wouldn't run it because running it will grind up your gears. Them gears are expensive. The bearings and seals can be bought at Allied bearings or some other bearing place for alot cheaper than you can get them at Case. Just take the bearing races and what's left of any seals to a bearing place and they can replace them most of the time. Don't run it tho cause it just gets more expensive to repair.
