Hi, Trying to find the serial number on a cat d6.
It is an older one, with a pony motor that has a rope pull start as well as an (added on?) electric start. Pony has an american bosch magneto. I've driven it, and everything seems to work OK, although I have zero cat experience.

Can anyone help? I can send or post pictures if that would help.
Thanks, Bob

I have worked on & with cats for almost 50 years
that sound like a cat D6B made in the 1960s. the pony was moundted on the side and came with both ele & Pull rope start. and in both Power Shift & Manual Transmission The sn should be stamped into the main case on the rear . facing the back at the top lh side. also on te side of hte engien block
plese send me a photo.
I probably hava a parts book.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your reply.

The pony sits on the centerline of the tractor, directly behind the engine, so that the rope pull faces aft, and is just forward of the operator's feet. Spark plugs are on either side of the tractor, pointing straight out horizontally.

I'll look at the locations you suggested, and send some photos early next week. Is JPEG format OK?

I'm currently in the process of buying this tractor now. The engine sounds fine, and doesn't smoke except for just a second after startup, and the oil pressure is good. The current owner says the steering and engine clutches and the pony motor have been newly rebuilt. He's asking $5000 for it; does this sound reasonable?

Also, I'm most interested in a copy or copy of a copy of the parts book. I'm a good mechanic, but all my experience is on lighter machines; a parts book would be a huge help.
